Stats and facts of coeliac disease
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is often mistaken with coeliac disease, sharing similar symptoms such as diarrhoea, constipation, tummy pain , bloating and wind. Both affect intestinal parts with IBS the colon or large intestine whilst coeliac disease the small intestine. Infact One British study found that the chance of having celiac disease was as much as 7 times higher for patients with IBS than for other members of the general public. For some Ibs symptoms can be made worse with stress , coffee , tea , or even by eating wheat, barley or rye.
New hope for coeliacs
Dr Bob Anderson, from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research is carrying out trials on a vaccine for coeliac disease. Although still in its testing stages the trials are looking positive. A drug has been formulated to undergo human trials which in itself is encouraging.
